A deep clean is the full reset your home needs once or twice a year, or before starting regular cleaning. This room-by-room checklist covers everything that goes beyond a routine clean, in the order that saves you from doing the same job twice. Use it to plan a weekend of cleaning, or to know exactly what to expect from a professional deep clean.
Work in this order
- Declutter first. Clear counters, tables and floors so every surface is reachable.
- Top to bottom. Ceilings, vents and high ledges first; floors last.
- Dry before wet. Dust and vacuum before you wipe or wash, so you don’t turn dust into streaks.
- Let products work. Apply descaler or degreaser, move to another task, then come back to wipe.
Every room
- Dust ceiling corners, light fixtures and ceiling fans
- Dust vents and air returns
- Wipe the tops of door frames, window frames and trim
- Wipe walls and remove scuffs; wipe baseboards
- Clean doors, handles and light switches
- Clean interior windows: glass, sills and tracks
Kitchen
- Pull out movable appliances (fridge, stove) and clean behind and under them
- Degrease cabinet faces, handles and the range hood
- Degrease counters and backsplash
- Descale and sanitize the sink and faucet, then polish
- Clean grout and tile (steam works best on grout)
- Optional: inside the oven, microwave and fridge
Bathrooms
- Descale and sanitize the shower, tub and glass door
- Clean the toilet inside and out, including the base and behind it
- Polish the sink, faucet and mirror
- Clean grout and tile
- Dust the exhaust fan cover
Bedrooms and living areas
- Move movable furniture and clean behind and under it
- Dust and polish furniture surfaces
- Dust shelves and décor item by item
- Dust lamps, picture frames and electronics
Floors (last)
- Vacuum everywhere, including edges, corners and under furniture
- Wash hard floors, working toward the door
How long does a deep clean take?
Much longer than a regular clean. It depends on the size of the home, the number of bathrooms and how much buildup there is. Doing it yourself, expect to spread it over a weekend. What a deep clean doesn’t include
Some jobs are separate services: exterior windows, carpet and upholstery shampooing, and outdoor areas like balconies and garages. Inside cabinets and drawers is part of a move-in/move-out clean, when the home is empty.
